Conventional therapy for cancer has consisted of regiments consisting of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. These modalities have greatly extended the life expectancy of many patients diagnosed with cancer. However, most patients cannot be cured and expect only modest benefit from current therapies with significant side effects. Efforts to use the immune system to hunt and kill cancer cells have come to fruition with immunotherapies now forming a fourth pillar of cancer care. Durable responses are now seen in malignancies where survival with conventional therapy was short. However, many patients still do not respond to these immunological therapies. Our laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which tumors evade the adaptive immune system and tries to develop therapeutic strategies to overcome these barriers.
